Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo: The Haka
After the initial set by the massed pipes and drums, the esplanade is taken over by the individual performance teams who each go through their own routine. The tattoo features performances from international military bands as well as bands from the British Armed Forces and the Commonwealth. In this case, members of the military band from New Zealand have laid their instruments on the ground in order to perform the ceremonial Haka LinkExternal link .
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual series of military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and international military bands on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. It is held each August as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The first official Edinburgh Military Tattoo, with eight items in the programme, was held in 1950. Since then, it has expanded considerably and in 2010 it was renamed “the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo” after HM Queen Elizabeth awarded the Royal title in celebration of its six decades of existence. The Tattoo performance takes place every weekday evening and twice on Saturdays throughout August and has never had to be cancelled due to inclement weather.
