According to legend, in the late 6th century (after St Patrick banished the serpents from Ireland, a great serpent (Lig-na-Paiste) was left behind and lived in a pool here, before being capture by a local holy man, St Murrough O'Heaney and banished to the waters of Lough Foyle.
