The patch of rosebay willowherb on the left marks the site where a cottage used to be. See Link. The building on the right houses the Well of Tarlair. NJ7164 : Tarlair Swimming Pool can be seen below the slopes on the right.
The Tarlair swimming pool complex was awarded Category A Listed Building status in 2007 because of its Art Deco design. It was designed by the Burgh Surveyor of Macduff, John C Miller, and built by local contractor Robert Morrison and Co, opening in 1931. It incorporates a rectangular swimming pool, a D-shaped boating pond and a small paddling pool surrounding a rock outcrop. Seawater was pumped into the pools, and heated only by the sun. The building housed changing rooms and a tearoom, and the flat roof served as a viewing terrace. The rise of package holidays and heated indoor pools resulted in a decline in the popularity of outdoor pools, and Tarlair finally closed in 1995. It is the most complete surviving outdoor swimming pool complex in Scotland.
