Thurles Railway Station
The station was built by the Great Southern and Western Railway, and was opened on 13 March 1848.
On 5 August in the same year, it was the scene of the arrest of the Irish nationalist leader, William Smith O’Brien who had led an uprising at nearby Ballingarry.
He and the other three leaders were found guilty of treason and were among the last people to be sentenced to ‘hanging, drawing and quartering’. At the insistence of Queen Victoria herself, who thought the sentencing too harsh for the crime committed, they were transported to Australia.
