St Margaret's Church, Fletton, Peterborough, Cambs.
The Grade 1-listed church of St Margaret of Antioch. Although a church here, presumably wooden one, was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, it is thought that a small church was rebuilt here - in stone this time - c.1150. A north chapel and north aisle were added approximately 15 years later and a south aisle and the west tower added around 1300. It seems that a great deal of restoration has occurred since then, including work in the 1870's and very early 1900's. The top of the spire was also replaced in 1917 after the church was struck by lightning. The porch is more modern, having been built at the time of its Victorian restoration. Although it has been described as a “unremarkable building” much more interest is often taken in its series of internal carvings.
