Looking to the south-east, near the skyline is the famous Uffington White Horse Link over 4 kilometres away. In the middle distance is a relatively new Hitachi bi-mode train heading west along Brunel's Great Western Railway now adorned along part of its length with overhead gantries carrying electrical cables to power the trains. The trains are called 'bi-modal' as they are capable of operating under their own power along stretches of line that have not been electrified.
Great Western Main Line Electrification

Network Rail is modernising the Great Western Main Line at the cost of 5 billion pounds. The work started in 2010 and is due to finish in 2017. It will entail the replacement of the ageing rolling stock with new electric trains. The section between Reading & Didcot is due to be used as the test line when it is finished.
