TL2984 : Booth's Hill Ice House, Ramsey, Cambs

Booth's Hill Ice House, Ramsey, Cambs.
A former C19th (unconfirmed) ice house built into a mound that exists on the southern side of the Abbey House estate at the junction of Hollow Lane and Abbey Road. It has been suggested that the mound could have been the site of a small motte and bailey castle (c.1140) or have been created by the dumping of spoil arising from the digging out of some adjacent ‘abbey-supplying’ fishponds. The paths and the site are overgrown but the area is open to the public. A new-ish (padlocked) door has been fitted to the ice house entrance by a local group of bat preservation enthusiasts.
