NO3261 : Boulders and stone shelter on Cat Law

taken 5 years ago, near to Easter Lednathie, Angus, Scotland

Boulders and stone shelter on Cat Law
Boulders and stone shelter on Cat Law
This wind shelter bears some resemblance to 'gauger's lookouts' found in a few places in Highland Scotland. Gaugers were excisemen whose job was to police the illicit distilling and smuggling of whisky in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

There was once illicit whisky smuggling in the Angus glens, so it seems possible this could've been a lookout place for smugglers, although equally it might just've been a shepherd's shelter.
