Kells Priory in Kilkenny
Kells Priory in Kilkenny
If you are not expecting it, the height of the walls, the towers and the area bounded by this site come as a complete surprise, to me at any rate. This is the view from the car park of Kells Priory and its associated defended enclosure, known as Burgess Court. The Priory, standing beside the Kings River Gaelic Abhainn Ri, was founded by Geoffrey FitzRobert in 1193, was burned three times between 1252 and 1327. It was dissolved in March 1540 and given over to James Butler 9th Earl of Ormonde. There have been some 20,000 finds here during archaeological digs. The site is open to the public and guided tours are available - for details contact staff at Jerpoint Abbey. Time photo taken not available.
