Former Cardiff Post Office, Heol y Porth / Westgate Street
Built between 1894 and 1897, Cardiff's new main Post Office was designed by Sir Henry Tanner, Chief Architect to the Office of Works. Built in Portland stone in a free classical style it was one of the first large-scale buildings to use Portland stone in Cardiff, a material taken up for monumental public buildings in Cathays Park later. Extended along Park Street, 1907. The building was listed by Cadw as Grade II in 1975. In 1983 the Post Office closed and moved into the original St Davids Precinct and is now destined for a counter in W H Smith's. After standing empty for some time the old Post Office is now to be converted into a hotel.
