Part of the Chain Gate ST5545 : Wells buildings [13], this is the entrance to the upper level passageway from Vicars' Close.
The Chain Gate, adjacent to the north side of Wells Cathedral dates from 1460 although it incorporates some 12th century work. Built to control access from St Andrew Street to the Cathedral Green. At ground level there is a wagon gate with pedestrian gates on both sides. The upper level provides a passageway between Vicars' Close and the chapter house of the cathedral. A Roman settlement around three wells that became much more important when the Anglo-Saxon King Ine of Wessex founded a minster church in 704, Wells is the second smallest city in England.
