Bigsweir Bridge, Wye Valley
Bigsweir Bridge, Wye Valley
Bigsweir Bridge spans both the River Wye and the boundary between England, on the left, and Wales, on the right. It carries the A466 which is now reduced to a single lane because of weight restrictions.
The bridge was originally built in 1829 jointly by the Chepstow and Monmouth Turnpike Trusts to promote access to the Wye Valley which was previously only accessible by boat. It was designed by Charles Hollis of London. The Toll House on the left was built sometime between 1820 and 1835 and was renovated in 1981.
The bridge is listed as Grade II* by Cadw.
