Goose Fair

The first reference to a ‘goose fair’ dates from 1541 although it is known that there were regular autumn fairs in Nottingham going back to Saxon times. The name is believed to derive from the practice of herding geese from Lincolnshire for sale in the town. Since 1752 Goose Fair has been held in the first week in October and by Victorian times the trade element of the fair had diminished to be replaced by what we would now recognise as a fun fair. The venue moved in 1928 from the Old Market Square to The Forest, a recreation ground to the north of the city centre, where it has remained ever since. Today it is one of the largest travelling fairs in the country, bringing together a vast range of rides and side shows, and is a hugely popular attraction for people across the east Midlands.
