Saint Paul’s is a huge Grade-II* listed church situated in the shadow of the Town Hall. It was designed by J. M. Teale of Doncaster and E. B. Denison, later Lord Grimthorpe. It is reported to have a ‘family’ likeness, through Denison's friendship with Sir Gilbert Scott, to Doncaster Parish Church, the ground plan and the tracery of the large windows being almost identical although on a slightly smaller scale. Apparently the first Lord Burton of the Bass brewing family, who built Saint Paul's, hoped the church would become a cathedral when Burton was made a city. Neither happened. The 123' tall tower is one of the tallest buildings in the town. Since 1 November 2005, Saint Paul's has been part of a single parish with Saint Aidan, Shobnall.
