Viper Barn pump
Viper Barn pump
This pump bears the date 1819 and is attached to the wall of the so-called Viper Barn at the Cowper & Newton Museum LinkExternal link . The poet William Cowper lived in this house (then called Orchard Side) from 1767 to 1786 and named the outbuilding at the rear because his kittens cornered a snake there which he dispatched with a garden hoe. The pump itself belongs to a later generation as Cowper died in 1800.
