The new buildings for Oxford Road station were designed by Max Clendinning (1924-2020, LinkExternal link ) in the late 1950s to early 1960s. The station's position on a viaduct called for a lightweight solution, and the awkward triangular site required flexibility: both these factors pushed Clendinning towards the use of laminated timber as the main material for the station. Clendinning's family had been involved in furniture manufacture so he was familiar with timber as a medium: in his own later career he was himself known for furniture and interior design.
Curved platform canopies can be seen through a gap in the wall on the left; these are also Clendinning's work, and can be seen at SJ8497 : Oxford Road station, Manchester.
