NS3779 : Carman Hill: a terrace-like feature

taken 4 years ago, near to Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Carman Hill: a terrace-like feature
Carman Hill: a terrace-like feature
This is the downhill edge (the southeastern extremity) of the main group of NS3779 : Boulders on Carman Hill. Stones enclose a terrace-like feature here; it can be seen that the line of stones on the right has (presumably) been worked centuries ago so that their surfaces are flat and level with each other, and their outward-facing sides vertical. See NS3779 : Carman Hill: a terrace-like feature for a view back from the other side, and NS3779 : Carman Hill: a terrace-like feature for the feature as a whole.

On the various groups of boulders on this hill, see Link in the article linked from the end-note.

The top of the NS3779 : Millburn Muir transmitter can be seen above the right-hand side of the nearest boulder, with the Fintry Hills directly behind it. The nearer Campsie Hills are just to their right, and the much closer and wooded Pappert Hill is just to the right again. The higher of the areas of housing in the right background are in New Bonhill.
Carman Hill-fort

This large hill-fort — see LinkExternal link (at Canmore) — was identified in 1954 from aerial photographs, and is thought to date from the Early Historic period (Dark Ages). See Link for a Geograph article on the fort. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view, and Link for other antiquities nearby.
