NS3779 : Dry-stone wall on Carman Hill

taken 4 years ago, near to Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Dry-stone wall on Carman Hill
Dry-stone wall on Carman Hill
The line of the wall is marked on the 1:25000 map, but not the 1:50000 map. It passes through the outer enclosure of the hill-fort on Carman Hill, but not the inner enclosure, which is to the wall's left in this view. It seems likely that the dry-stone wall contains, at least in part, stones that originally made up the enclosures of the fort, if only because those building the wall would have made use of material close at hand. The wall was present in 1860 when the first-edition OS map of the area was surveyed. That map does not show the fort, whose existence was unknown to map-makers until almost a century later.

The main group of NS3779 : Boulders on Carman Hill can be seen not far ahead on the right. Dumbuck Quarry is directly behind those stones, on the near shore of the Clyde.
Carman Hill-fort

This large hill-fort — see LinkExternal link (at Canmore) — was identified in 1954 from aerial photographs, and is thought to date from the Early Historic period (Dark Ages). See Link for a Geograph article on the fort. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view, and Link for other antiquities nearby.
