Mechanics Institutes were for the technical and literary education of working class people. This one was built in 1868, but in 1911 became a cinema (Eccleshill Picture House), in use until 1931. It is currently leased from the City Council by a local community association as a community space, cafe and bookshop. Listed grade II (list entry 1291336).
