Edith Cavell's Grave, Norwich Cathedral
Edith Cavell was born in the Swardeston Rectory, Norfolk in 1865. She worked as a governess in Belgium before deciding to train as a nurse at The London Hospital. She eventually accepted a matron’s post at Belgium’s first training hospital and nursing school. During WWI it became a Red Cross hospital and it was here that she nursed injured soldiers. Unbeknownst to her nursing colleagues, she was part of a network of people who aided and abetted the escape of allied soldiers and civilians from Belgium. Between 5 August - 11 October 1915 she was arrested, tried and sentenced by a German military court before being shot on 12 October. In 1919 her body was repatriated and buried in the grounds of the cathedral. However, in 2016 her grave was re-sited here, and re-dedicated, courtesy of a Department for Culture, Media and Sport grant. The words on her gravestone are identical to those on her statue situated near Trafalgar Square: ‘Patriotism is not enough, I must have no hatred or bitterness for anyone.’
