Maddermarket Theatre, Norwich
In the Early 1920s Walter N. B. Monck’s ‘Guild of Norwich Players’ needed a permanent venue for their theatrical productions. Because of this, once these premises became available they purchased what had at various times been: a baking soda factory, a warehouse, a Salvation Army Citadel and lastly a Roman Catholic Chapel for £600. It was converted into the 220 seat Maddermarket Theatre for £3,300 and it was formally opened by W.B. Yeats in September 1921. It took its name from its proximity to a medieval market where the root of the madder plant - used in dyeing cloth - was sold. Two entrances to the theatre are visible, including one on the left serviced by some wooden steps.
