The population of the original parish of Heigham (“village by the water”) grew by over 13,000 in the 60 years from 1801. Hence it became both necessary to enlarge the church and provide four additional churches during the latter part of the C19th century.  Thus St. Barnabas Church was constructed and then consecrated, in January 1906. The oldest part of the church hall was originally a Victorian Cloth Works.
