Oakwell Hall is a Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house in Birstall.
The house was built for John Batt, probably in 1583.
It was the inspiration for "Fieldhead" in Charlotte Brontė's novel "Shirley".
Oakwell Hall passed into public ownership in 1928 and is currently owned and managed by Kirklees Council. The Hall is now a museum with its interior restored in a late 17th century style.
Its gardens are laid out in a period style and it lies in a 45 hectare country park.
Oakwell Hall was immortalised in literature as "Fieldhead" by Charlotte Brontė, in her novel Shirley.
