"These structures are trace fossils of the genus Thalassinoides. Specifically they are branching horizontal burrows made by shrimps, crabs, worms, fish, echinoids etc. burrowing through soft sediment on the seafloor. The burrows remain but the creatures which made them typically do not! They could be locomotion (travel) burrows, or the organisms were sieving out food from the sediment, or both."
