Memorial on Butts Bridge over the River Bain
On the A153 road bridge over the River Bain is a memorial plaque to two separate air crashes involving Lancasters from 97 (Straits Settlements) Sqdn.
Lancaster W4175 OF-U had departed Woodhall Spa at 21:51 on 29/03/44 for Ops Berlin.
On its return, whilst circling the airfield awaiting permission to land, the aircraft crashed in Coningsby at 04:45. All seven crew were killed.

Lancaster PB422 OF-P had departed Coningsby at 1123 on 13/07/45 for a bombing exercise.
Almost immediately the Port Outer Engine burst into flames.
The aircraft climbed steeply, stalled and crashed. The crew of four were all killed.

Wartime aircraft crash Memorials

During the Second World War hundreds of aircrew were lost in accidents while training, landing, taking off or attempting to get back to their base with a badly damaged aircraft.
By creating this shared description and collecting them into one place I will not only pay tribute to the men who lost their lives in the line of duty but hopefully give some scale to the cost in lives.
These are just the ones who have a memorial; there are hundreds more who have no memorial or were lost at sea. They should not be forgotten. Their lives were equally precious.
In Honour of those who served and in Memory of those who fell.
