Honeycomb weathering is a form of cavernous weathering and a subcategory of tafoni. Although the cratered appearance of sandstone surfaces, such as that of Red Castle, have long been noted, the exact mechanism of the process is not well understood. Factors linked to the complex interaction between salt and elements of the weather such as wind and rain are thought to be key factors.
Biological weathering is also taking place as where the roots of a bush are growing from the foundations of the tower or keep.
