Harwich: The Treadwheel Crane
Harwich: The Treadwheel Crane
The Treadwheel Crane was built in 1667 in the old Harwich Navy Yard, and moved to this site in 1930. The treadwheel, which was operated by two men, is enclosed inside the weatherboarded building and was therefore known as a house crane. It is thought to be the oldest surviving example of its type in Britain, if not the only example.

The Treadwheel Crane is both a Grade II* Listed Building and a Scheduled Monument.
