Steam Tug Cervia - Wheel house
Launched in 1946 as Empire Raymond and renamed Cervia on her sale to William Watkins Ltd the same year. In 1954 she sank in service with the loss of five lives but was salvaged and put back in service. In 1971 she was laid up and in 1972 was acquired for preservation. It would seem that being put back into service was the best form of preservation and she earned her keep from 1974 until 1983. She is now on loan to the Ramsgate Maritime Museum and is being restored and maintained by volunteers. This view is of the Donkin steam steering engine in the enclosed wheel house. The vertical shaft on the left extending upwards indicates that there was also a steering position on the roof of the wheel house. In the event of a failure of the steam power the big wheel could be used for manual steering but it must have been hard work.
