The former Lunan Parish Church
The former Lunan Parish Church
The photo shows the former Lunan Parish Church which was built in 1844 on the site, or close to it, of its medieval predecessor which was mentioned in the year 1200 and dedicated in 1242.
Inside the former church, there is a plaque to Walter Mill (1476-1558) which informs us that he was the minister there for upwards of 40 years. (Jervise, Epitaphs, vol. 1, p. 241 says this is an error for 20.) In 1558, and his 83rd year, he was taken to St Andrews because of his protestant beliefs and practices. Despite entreaties to revert to Catholicism, he remained steadfast to his Protestant faith. He was sentenced to burning at the stake but because the townsfolk refused to provide the necessary rope and firewood, the sentence was delayed by one day. This was the last Protestant martyrdom in Scotland before the Reformation and it is widely believed that his martyrdom was instrumental in triggering that event.
