On the south-western corner of the cliffs below Deganwy Castle is a very prominent and fresh-looking rock face. Judging from the broken debris that litters the ground, this was a quarry at some point. It is my opinion that it is the source of the colourful rock which was used to enclose the areas of the original Deganwy Estate before the present housing was built from the early 20th century onwards. The rock is a pale grey rhyolitic tuff, but frequent and prominent fractures are stained intensely with ochreous iron deposits, which give magnificent, warm hues to boundary walls in the area. Quarried rock faces are mostly clean, unlike the natural outcrop which is overgrown with a thick coat of grey lichen which relishes the frequent rainfall in this exposed location. See also
