The Kaleyard Gate, Chester
The Kaleyard Gate is located in Chester's walls near the cathedral. It was cut through the wall around 1275 after the monks of St Werburgh's Abbey petitioned Edward I to allow easier access to their vegetable garden instead of having to walk through Eastgate. Edward allowed this under certain conditions, one of which is that the gate should be locked at nightfall, a tradition that continued until quite recently. The gate is pictured here from inside the city walls.
Due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak the gate is now locked for the foreseeable future. The decision the Cathedral Estate to close the gate during lockdown has not been popular with some members of the public who feel it was unnecessary.
