Entrance to an Underground 'Nuclear Bunker'
Entrance to an Underground 'Nuclear Bunker'
This is the entrance (structure on the right) to an underground bunker (1 metre below ground level) built in 1962 when the 'Cold War' with Russia was becoming a real danger and a nuclear attack was a real possibility. It was manned by up to three Royal Observer Corps personnel and their task was to monitor for any nuclear detonation through an instrument pushed through and kept on the surface through the tube in the middle of the picture. Ventilation was provided through the stack on the left. If a Nuclear explosion did take place, the three personnel would be able to radio the strength and direction of the blast to enable its actual location to be triangulated from other reports and provide an estimate of its strength. The bunker had sufficient resources for the personnel to stay down there for up to 3 weeks.
