Yum, Yum!!
The blossoming of the Hawthorn marks the point at which Spring turns into Summer and the old saying, "Cast ne'er a clout ere May is out" refers to the opening of the flower. The Hawthorn is a Pagan symbol of fertility and always associated with Mayday. It is the ancestor of the Maypole. Associated with death, the Hawthorn was never brought into the home. This tree can support more than 300 insect types ranging from caterpillars of the moth to the honey bee; its flowers are eaten by dormice and it provides nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects. The fruit of the tree, the haw provides a rich source of food for migrating birds such as the Fieldfare, the Thrush, the Waxwing, and the Redwing. The rich foliage of the tree provides a safe nesting site for many species of bird.
