Man Orchid (Orchis anthropophora)
Closeup of some individual flowers of the plant in
TQ2352 : Man Orchid (Orchis anthropophora) and
TQ2352 : Man Orchid (Orchis anthropophora). In the UK, the Man Orchid is a speciality of the North Downs (as here), with few sites elsewhere. Typical habitat is in open grassland on chalk, often in old chalk pits, although this one is unusual in that it is growing in shade. This one is also unusually tall, at around 45cm, perhaps explained by its position. The individual flowers have a slightly humanoid appearance, with head, arms and legs, hence both its English and Latin names (anthropophora means "man bearing").
