During a storm in 1839 parts of this tower collapsed together with most of a spiral stair in a circular turret in the SW corner. The first mention of the castle was in the mid-16th century when it was the residence of the Wynchedon or Nugent family. By the late 16th century however, it was in the possession of the Russells who were the 'hereditary castellans to the Earl of Desmond'.
