Southwark Cathedral
The diocese of Southwark was created in 1905, thus raising this church to the status of Cathedral. The cathedral is dedicated to St Saviour and St Mary Overie. Often overlooked by visitors to London, the cathedral is well worth visiting. A church has occupied this spot for more than one thousand years, going back to a nunnery founded in the 7th century. Of note, inside in the north transept, is the Harvard Memorial Chapel. John Harvard, who was the founder of the famous Harvard University in the United States was born in Southwark in 1607. Buried in the cathedral in an unmarked grave is Edmund Shakespeare (1580-1607) who was an actor and younger brother of William Shakespeare.
