Site of Benedictine Priory from the south-east corner, Minting
A Scheduled Monument the priory was one of two established by Ranulph de Meschins, Earl of Chester before his death in 1129. It began as a land grant to the Abbey of St Benoît sur Loire at Fleury and included the manor church of Minting and Gautby with other lands. About 1238 Bishop Grossteste wrote to the Abbot of Fleury 'The monks at Minting had lately been found to be living luxuriously with harlots.....had been given much to eating and drinking, not being ashamed to eat meat, even on a Wednesday'
