The Huskar Monument
The Huskar Monument
A memorial to the 26 children who lost their lives in 1838 when the Huskar Pit was flooded following an intense rainstorm. The monument features two children, a boy and a girl, in representations of the seams in which they were working. The youngest victim was only 7 years old and the inquiry into the disaster led to the 1842 Mines Act which prohibted all girls and boys under the age of ten from working underground.
