Fortescue Arms and Coach House, Market Place, Tattershall
Fortescue Arms and Coach House, Market Place, Tattershall
Grade II Listed hotel and coach house, 15th century, early 18th century with 19th and 20th century alterations. Apparently formerly called The Angel in an 1815 gazetteer being the only inn listed. Innkeeper on the 1841 and 1851 Census was John Rhoades with his wife Mary Ann who also appear in White's 1856 directory that lists it as 'Fortescue Arms, (posting)'. Earl Fortescue was lord of the manor and built the local Public Elementary School in 1864. His principal seats were Castle Hill, Devonshire, and Ebrington, Gloucestershire. Bertie Eyre (1909-2008) of B Eyre and Son Ltd. rented a garage from the Fortescue Arms in 1952 and to avoid losing his premises he had little choice but to purchase it when it came up for sale. He ran the pub for a while and then sold it on, presumably retaining the coach house, while adjoining properties were purchased over a period. It appears the pub was closed for a time reopening in or before October 2013. Directory entries include; 1828 James Hodson, Angel (& posting house); 1835 Joseph Rhoades, Angel; 1841 John Rhoades, Fortesque Arms; 1856-1861 Mary Rhodes (& posting); 1868-1872 John Short (posting house & brewer & farmer); 1885 Tom Short P.H.; 1889 Frederick Higham Blades (& veterinary surgeon); 1896 Alfred Barratt P.H.; 1905 Herbert Conyers (posting house, accommodation for cyclists, billiards); 1909 Frederick Wilkinson (posting); 1913 Arthur John Bailey; 1919 Mrs Miriam Hartley.
