Arklow Castle Wall, Arklow, Wicklow
This is a section of a length of curtain wall of Arklow Castle that dates probably from the 13th century. This, along with a circular corner tower covered in ivy above a ravine is all that remains of the castle that still contains two loops and a window elsewhere in its surviving curtain wall. In the 1190s the Butlers had a seat here, and in 1331 rebel Irish captured the castle that was recaptured in 1332 by Justiciar Lucy. The castle was then taken by the Kavanagh MacMurroughs in 1452, but was returned to the Butlers in 1530. It was destroyed in 1649 to prevent it being taken and occupied by Cromwellian forces.
