Rusty Tat in the North Peninnes
Cow Green Reservoir hides a lot of secrets, some of which should have been cleared away before the valley of the Upper Tees was flooded, as this large area of rusty scrap shows, a lot of it wasn't. The area around the shores are now a National Nature Reserve, but is this detritus really acceptable?
Before this major dam was built (post WW2), primarily to provide water to ICI and the rest of the industrial area at the mouth of the Tees, there was a 'ghastly, serpentine lake' (the cauldron of Cauldron Snout) here - known locally as 'The Weel'.
