Thomastown Castle, Tipperary (1)
According to the Landed Estates database the house that originally stood here was a two storey house of pink brick built in the 1670s by George Mathew with early 18th additions. In the early C19 it was enlarged and transformed into a Gothic castle in 1812 by Richard Morrison for the 2nd Earl of Llandaff, a descendant of the original Matthew family who owned it from the earliest of times. From 1870 the house fell into disrepair and eventually became the impressive and spectacular ruin we see today. The interior still has at its core the remains of the original 17th century house.
