Castles of Leinster: Ballyfoyle, Kilkenny
Castles of Leinster: Ballyfoyle, Kilkenny
Ballyfoyle was probably built by the Purcells in the late 16th century but was later forfeited along with the estate and granted to one of Cromwell's followers, one Tobias Cramer. The castle continued to be inhabited, together with a 17th century house which was attached to it, until c.1748. Unusual in most Kilkenny towers is a fine spiral stair with a proper newel in the NE corner, and west of the north end wall are two upper levels of rooms over an entrance passage. There is also a vaulted guardroom, and the main room on the third storey has a fine fireplace.
