Castles of Leinster: Huntington, Carlow (1)
Huntington to this day remains the ancient seat of the Esmonde family whose C17 stronghouse at Clonegal was built in 1625 by Laurence, Earl of Esmonde. Despite subsequent alterations, it retains its original 17th century plaster ceilings. The castle was extended in the 1680s by the 2nd Baronet, and altered in 1720, and further altered in 1860 by Alexander Durdin when it probably acquired its castellated parapet. The present owners are the Durdin Robertson family who are direct descendants of the Esmondes.
