ST5574 : Transport systems in the Avon Gorge

Transport systems in the Avon Gorge
Transport systems in the Avon Gorge
The 19.10 from Temple Meads has just emerged from Clifton Down Tunnel (1751 yds) & heads for Avomouth & Severn Beach. On the adjoining Portway (A4) cars stream out of Bristol. Sadly by 1966 there is little commercial traffic on the River Avon. For a 2019 photo from nearby (but with the tide out) see ST5574 : The Portway. For a view of a train at the same point but from across the river see ST5574 : An Avonmouth train from across the river.
After uploading I've discovered that the Portway opened on 2nd July 1926 - ie 40 years to the day before the date of my photo, an extraordinary & unplanned coincidence!
