Transport systems in the Avon Gorge
The 19.10 from Temple Meads has just emerged from Clifton Down Tunnel (1751 yds) & heads for Avomouth & Severn Beach. On the adjoining Portway (A4) cars stream out of Bristol. Sadly by 1966 there is little commercial traffic on the River Avon. For a 2019 photo from nearby (but with the tide out) see
ST5574 : The Portway. For a view of a train at the same point but from across the river see
ST5574 : An Avonmouth train from across the river.
After uploading I've discovered that the Portway opened on 2nd July 1926 - ie 40 years to the day before the date of my photo, an extraordinary & unplanned coincidence!
