Castles of Munster: Blackrock, Cork
Castles of Munster: Blackrock, Cork
The entirely C19 appearance of this castle belies the fact that the two lower levels of the circular four storey tower date from c.1582 when it was built by the citizens of Cork on the north bank of the River Lee in order to guard the approach to the city at this point. The castle was 'Gothicised' in 1828-38 when the other tower was added, together with further buildings and a court at the back. The former gunloops of the old tower at the lowest level are now blocked, and a modern restaurant has been incorporated on the second storey with wooden framed windows inserted into the gunports.
