Stradey Park, once the famous home of rugby for Llanelli, was demolished around 10 years ago and is now a housing estate, after Llanelli's home for rugby was moved to the much more modern Parc-Y-Scarlets stadium, on the eastern side of the town.
Little remains now of the old stadium and sports grounds (
SN4900 : Llanelli Scarlets at Stradey Park) apart from a monument near to the location of the old stadium itself and these, the original goal posts, now relocated a short distance away to Sandy Water Park, now set up as a monument with statues of a couple of rugby players (the one wearing red about to score a try against, presumably a New Zealand All Black player!).
Notice the outlines of saucepans on the top of the posts - this is a reference to a popular "nonsense" song that is still sung at matches by the fans to this day in Welsh - "Sosban Fach".
The other surviving goal posts
SS5498 : Roundabout on A484 with distinctive theme are also placed in a prominent position on a roundabout on the approach road from Loughor to Llanelli.
