Opened in 1860 as "Hightown Siding" by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway on the line from Liverpool to Southport, the name changed to "Highgate New Siding" in 1865, then "Highgate Rifle station" in 1871 before becoming "Altcar Rifle Range Halt" in 1886. This non-timetabled halt closed around 1935.
View north from the trackside. The platform brickwork was still in situ when this image was taken, although the platform buildings had long-since vanished.
