This statue by Pio Fedi (1816 - 1892) was purchased by Queen's University's great benefactor, Sir William Whitla, on a trip to Italy. It originally stood in his garden at Lennoxvale House, before being presented to the Ulster Medical Society and set up in the Medical Institute in 1902. With Whitla's consent, the sculpture was transferred to the Belfast Public Library in 1915 and subsequently to the Ulster Museum. After 65 years, title was transferred to the University and the statue was removed to the Medical Biology Centre at Belfast City Hospital. There it remained until 2001 when it was placed here in the newly restored Black and White Hall.

Born in Pisa, Italy, Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642) pioneered experimental scientific method and paved the way for modern mathematical and experimental physics.

During his lifetime, Pio Fedi was considered one of Europe's finest sculptors. One of his best known works, The Rape of Polyxena (1865), is housed in the Loggia del Lanzi in Florence where the artist had his studio. Fedi received a number of commissions from England and America and his La Fiorentina can be seen in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
