The Memorial Church
The stone plaque on what is now known as Central Church J3473 : Central Church reads:
"THE MEMORIAL CHURCH,
ERECTED A.D.1829,
FOR
REV.H.COOKE, D.D.LL.D.
__________
IN RECOGNITION OF HIS EMINENT AND
SUCCESSFUL LABORS FOR THE TRUTH AGAINST
THE PREVAILING ERRORS OF THE TIME."
May Street Presbyterian church, Belfast
May Street Presbyterian church was built in 1828/29 to a design by one W Smith. The minister was the Rev Henry Cooke J3374 : The Black Man, Belfast. Charlie Brett described it as “a really handsome Palladian example of the Presbyterian taste for the solidly classical. . . the memorial doorway to Dr Cooke, for whom the church was built is uncommonly good of its period, was designed in 1872 by John Boyd”. Another source describes it thus “A fine classical church of red brick with stucco dressings” but puts the doorway at 1870.
